Game 2 - Post Match Discussion

The most likely situation is Parker and Slater will be unavailable, and hopefully Thaiday will be fit again. Simple changes:
1. Inglis to fullback
2. Nielsen into the centres
3. Thaiday into the back row
4. Taylor back to the bench

Nielsen in the team really worries me. He has never been, and never will be a player that can create something from nothing. Then we have hodges on the other side of the field who is a passenger at the moment. I think we need more attacking flair, so i would leave inglis where he is, and bring in barba. I dont think they will go that way however. They will pick nielsen. We just then need to hope inglis has the game of his life, coz he will be our ONLY attacking weapon

Well the other options are:
1. Boyd to fullback, O'Neill/Barba to the wing
2. Inglis to fullback, Boyd to left centre, O'Neill/Barba to the wing
3. Bowen or Barba into fullback - both of which scare the crap out of me defensively

Cant see boyd being moved to centre. If anything, tate would move.

I dont want nielsen in the team fullstop. Especially on the wing. i agree about bowen being a worrying fullback in defense, but have u watched barba lately? He pulled off 2 brilliant try savers the other week (cant remember against who). His defence and ability under the high ball has improved dramatically. We need some attacking flair, nielsen doesnt bring it.

Just remembers there were a few more less than 50-50 calls that went NSWs way - Tate getting tackled, then hayne or someone giving a second effort to almost put him over the sideline. It doesn't matter that he didn't go over, it's still a penalty every day of the week.
I can't be bothered addressing every indication you mentioned but there were others that went Qld's way that were missed as well.

Just on this one though. There had been plenty of 2nd efforts both ways that had been let go.

If Tate goes over the sideline fair enough penalise Hayne. The problem is Tate has to be sure that if he goes over he will get the penalty. He isn't, so fights to not go over and Hayne lets go because he gets warned by the ref or the touchie.

Now you can say that the tackle had been completed twice, as soon as he touches Tate or at the end of the "second effort". Tate bounces to his feet and due to Hayne is no longer holding on, they say play on. So he is given an advantage. It might not be as good as a penalty but frankly I thought it was a good call.

It is just one of those ones you see some of them get penalised, you see some of them get told to go back and play the ball and sometimes you get to play on.

some stats:

Dave Taylor - 47 minutes, 7 runs for 60m
Matt Gillett - 46 minutes, 4 runs for 21m

what the f#$%. we basically had 2 passengers along for the ride in those 2. at LEAST one of them needs to go, we cant afford to just waste big minutes on someone who isnt prepared to get into the match. how the hell does a second rower do 4 runs in 46 minutes!?! here i was thinking Creaghs 4 runs in 27 minutes was pathetic.

also for the stats fans - civonicevas stats went down, while shillington and scotts went up. scott got over 10m per hitup over 15 hitups, very impressive.

Civoniceva - 14 hitups, 106m (38 minutes)
Scott - 15 hitups, 159m (43 minutes)
Shillington - 17 hitups, 157m (42 minutes)
Hannant - 5 hitups, 32m (24 minutes)

So he is given an advantage. It might not be as good as a penalty but frankly I thought it was a good call.

how is it a good call? its a penalty. the fact that they somehow called it play on and tate made probably 10 metres doesnt change the fact that there is NO way in hell it shouldve been play on and it shouldve been an obvious penalty to QLD. you cant tackle someone then pick them up and try carry them over the sideline, only to have them tackled again, and then let them get up and play on! it was as comical as the roosters/broncos "roosters ball, broncos ball, play on" sequence of events.

Well I'm a firm believer that stats are irrelevant unless you're worrying about fantasy league, but there's no doubt Gillett has been ineffective in both games, and Taylor was very poor starting.

Of the two you'd stick with Taylor on the bench (assuming Thaiday is back).
The more I think about it, the more I think Te'o needs to come in in place of Gillett. He's more likely to run better lines, and make punishing defence from the bench than Gillett who seemed overawed in both games.

Yup, totally agree on teo. I hadnt even considered him until jeb mentioned him. Great option and hes in superb form

Scott also missed 4 tackles and was our weakest link in the ruck defensively. He should be dropped!

a few missed tackles in the middle of the ruck arent too bad and are expected. do you remember any of his misses? i dont, as they were most likely he makes first contact and falls off when the other defenders hit. his play the ball error was a coach killer though, and things like that are what cost us the game. 12 errors vs 3 errors, you dont win origins with stats like that.

oi guy, i mentioned him first! lol

I would drop Taylor for Te'o, Thaiday back in for Parker, Nielsen in the centres with Inglis at FB.

Must say I am surprised that Gillett played so many minutes, but while he had less impact than desired, he didn't have brain explosions like Taylor, actually broke tackles and was a much better defender and chaser of the ball. All that while performing on his second Origin game at the very hostile Homebush venue.
Taylor has absolutely no excuses for his crap performance!

Watch the game again... Farah made him his bitch several times.

If Slater is out of Game 3, i wouldn't mind seeing Boyd back to Fullback and bring in Ash Graham on the wing. Also, Johnson looked pretty good back in the Maroon jersey warming up.
