NEWS Versatile Bird no lock to stay centre

Why does lock have to make that many tackles or so many hit ups. One of broncs issues is too much one up stuff or wasting tackles with a late set forward run. Move the ball a little more but i think Bird could be damaging with runs from dummy half or linking with another ball runner (with odd dummy where sees a hole) more than classic hit ups.

As for defence if does 25 instead of 35 not the end of the world. Use speed of centres and wingers to harass in defence from marker when keeping teams pinned down. Or my preferred option of playing 3 props first 20 to soak up early work with a guy like TPJ told you have 20 go hard then you’ll have a long break to recover for your next stint at 50min mark and then bring Bird in fresh to run riot on tired and shell shocked defence.

Why can't he do that as a roaming centre??

Bird only played 20's for the Dragons. 37 games, 15 tries. 13-14.

Bennett said yesterday in the press conference that he signed him, went to his house and got him as a 16 year old.
The question after that to Bennett was, "What did you see in him as a player back then?"
Bennett said, "I didn't see anything. I got told he was a good player."

My worry is can we afford a roaming center on our left side alongside Milford who isnt a great defender. Could end up with huge holes there .

I'd like to see bird 5/8, milf to half and Kodi on the bench. Opa in the centres too. Still think he could be freddy like at 5/8.

Milf is no half back though.

Only if we turn the ball over . He obviously wouldn't roam in defense. Same can be said for knik.

Is the plan that he will be roaming in defence or attack though? Was Hodgo ever caught out of position from his roaming?

I imagine 99% of the time Bird will be in position outside Milford.

Not being snarky, it’s a serious question.

In an ideal world, he would only roam in attack but in reality you just can't guarantee he won't be out of position if we turn the ball over or something like that.

Also it would depend on how much he roams I guess. I can't recall Hodges roaming all over the place and he did used to pick and choose when he did go looking for the ball. I could be totally wrong, but I have a feeling Bird will go looking a lot more than Hodges did because he has even said himself he wants the ball in his hands more and can go missing if he doesn't get it.

Bennett would have done his research on Bird before he was sitting at his house.

I’ve seen it many times. Why haven’t you been to uni in three weeks?

Kid looks down at feet.

He knows everything.

your definitely right ... but having a player like him will allow us to spend some cash in other positions.

He is alot like Glenn in the sense that you know what you will get from him... a capable NRL standard player, that will go out there and do a job for you week in, week out, but will never demand the big cash, because they aren't a flashy "superstar"

in the days of the salary cap, every team needs several players just like him
He's the new Jack Reed.

Maguire isn't a prop . We need size up front, thats how the game is going
No it isn't. The game is going the way of fit, mobile players. The interchange will drop again very soon (probably next season) and you need big motors.

Like Maguire in the middle and some big props. If it was going that way why have the last 3 premiers had big forward pack's????

Its not all down to the size of their props though. Take Thurston out of the Cowboys side, they dont beat us and we didnt have a big pack. Take away Slater, Cronk and Smith, one of the best spines in history imo, and Melbourne arent even half the side. Cronulla i agree did win it really on the back of their forwards.

Does anyone know what Bird thinks is his best position? I know he has said that he'll play anywhere but not sure I've seen anything from him as to what position he sees himself as.

Ask any of those guys how they win games! Guarantee they say there forwards game them the feild position. We don't have the halves to help with feild position, they need forward momentum.
