Can You Front End Contracts?

Whilst pondering why the Sharks would pay 350k a year to Carney (and then thinking there's probably nobody better to spend it on) it occurred to me: Why not just pay Gallen 1mil the first year then 100k the next 2 years and go spending in those last 2 years? Or is it not possible to front end contracts?
 
Can't see any reason why not but there is a fair bit of risk. What if they don't perform to expectations? You've already paid out the bulk of the contract so you don't get much value for money if they "move on" to another club. Or they retire early or suffer a career ending injury in the second year of the contract?
 
You wouldn't do it for anybody, but if you have some room under the cap and the season is about to begin, it's cap money you wouldn't spend anyway.
