I'd forgotten how good it was to go to a live game tbh. My thanks to @Morkel for the spare ticket...even if I did have to sift through 3 to find the right one. Great game and great atmosphere. A number of questionable calls both ways I thought, but that's the way it goes. Playing "The Horses" as the team runs out is lame as ****, the announcer still sounds like he's half asleep "C'mon let's hear it folks...Let's goooooo Broncos" delivered in the monotone to end all monotones and paying $7 for a fucking powerade can eat the same amount of dicks as Drinkwater. I shudder to think what a watered down XXXX Gold would have cost.

I would turn for Reece Walsh and the loss of Herbie just still hurts so much. I still can't believe Reynolds missed so many conversions but that FG...he had all the time in the world lol. Oh well.

I was happy with the announcer compared to the Manly fan we usually have in there. Hopefully we’ve gotten rid of him for good. The music was different all night too.

3 weeks for Drinky isn't close to enough, should be 5-6 weeks. 2 weeks for Hiku isn't either, though 3 for that is probably ok. Cannot believe Townsend escaped any sanction for the Oates incident, nor that the shots on Walsh/Mam were overlooked either.

Marty I don't think even had a case to answer, he barely touched one of the players' legs and it was obvious he was curling his body away to avoid that contact too. No chance of injuring the player in that scenario, so for mine it was barely a penalty IMO.

Klein can eat a bag of dicks, that was atrocious officiating in parts.

Bad officiating. But, winning so dominantly with so many calls going against us was pretty cool. Now for the review

1. Walsh 10/10 best performance by a bronco fullback in over 10 years
2. Cobbo 5/10 not the best game, but didn’t too anything wrong either
3. Staggs 7.5/10 scored a try and pretty much made best centre in the game redundant. Could be better but pretty good.
4. Herbie 8.5/10 we will miss Herbie
5. Oates 8/10 strong performance until unfortunate jawbreak
6. Mamm 7/10 mixed game. So dangerous and he was everywhere but had dick fingers
7. Reynolds 5.5/10 one of his worst games, but that’s okay, happens sometimes… Still provided good leadership direction
8. Jensen 7.5/10 does his job, quiet achiever. In a team of superstars this guy has cemented his spot in the 13
9. Walters 5/10 fucking shit first stint , pretty good second stint
10. Haas 8.5/10 the big marn
11. Capewell 6/10 wasn’t overly stoked on his game, scored a good try but quiet in attack and Nanai’s first try was on him i thought.
12. Riki 8/10 one of his best games for the broncos. Right side D was strong.
13 Patty 8/10 we love Patty

reserves
Flegler 8/10 great impact, felt his presence
Paix 8/10 the momentum shifter
Kapowww 8/10 such a good signing, loving what he brings to us
Palasia 5/10 annoying error and just not much presence out there
Arthars 8.5/10 wow didn’t expect that, safe and dangerous.

Think we got an answer to Kevvie’s 4 forwards on the bench.

With 2 HIAs required to activate the 18th man this year, we’re going to run with 4 bench forwards and then manufacture HIAs as necessary to activate the 18th man who will be an outside back.

gives you in essence a 5 man bench with the outside back only being used in case of emergency without having to dedicate a 14-17 spot.

seems like the kind of ‘progressive’ thinking towards the rules we’ve seen at all the successful clubs the last few years and seems like we’re now wising up too.

Mate, you are kidding yourself. HE GOT A BROKEN JAW FROM AN ILLEGAL TACKLE ON THE WAY TO THE TRYLINE THAT PREVENTED HIM FROM SCORING. Wtf is a penalty try if that isn't one? Please, give me the definition? You're practically saying he should have scored anyway, with a BROKEN JAW. It became his 2nd priority!!!!! He wouldn't have even been able to think straight, his JAW SPLIT IN HALF.

I just cannot fathom that you don't think it's a penalty try. Very weird hill to die on. I am seriously having trouble even contemplating your train of thought here. His opportunity to score was altered, massively, by an illegal play. There is no way on this earth he doesn't simply roll over, which he had ample opportunity to do, if he didn't have a broken jaw. Even my mates who hate the broncos have said it was the clearest penalty try they've seen. It's very, very similar to 99 storm vs dragons gf (high shot, didn't get the ball down, would have). Are you suggesting he stops moving forward after he got hit? Bcos that's the only way it fits your definition.

If a winger got a broken jaw on his own 20 should he get a penalty try ?
He might have run the length and score . But he was denied ...

Very weird hill to die on.

Aren't HIAs assessed by independent doctors? How are you suggesting the HIAs are to be manufactured?

Its a brilliant TV sport, hence why its the most watched sport in the world both live and on TV. These days, while attendances are still through the roof, its not like it used to be. Since the invention of the Premier League game days are very different because they decimated the 3pm, Saturday afternoon kick off times. The go to the pub for a pint then watch the game, then go to the pub for more pints after the game has been taken away from a lot of top flight football fans with the kick off time changes. One thing i do miss over here is going to the Footy. I find fans over here too passive and too quiet. The atmosphere is lacking and i cant put my finger on why really.

We do love football in the UK though. Its crazy to think there are clubs in the 4th tier of English football that get bigger crowds than NRL clubs. I dont know if anyone has ever seen them, but just Google Hackney Marshes football. Its crazy to see something like 80 pitches all next to each other for teams to play on and they are full on saturdays and sundays.

The atmosphere for Rugby League is embarrassing. I took two friends to a Broncos game that I usually went to Roar games with. Pre-game they saw how many people were in the stands compared to the Roar games and they were thinking it was going to be so loud. I told them, just wait for kick off, you could hear a pin drop. Sure enough. They couldn't believe how quiet it was.

Broncos fans don't even bother to sing the team song after games. Even a half-hearted broncos clap-clap-clap gets minimal involvement. Everyone is too cool to be involved or something?

As for attendance, you are right. 42k is pretty bad. Especially now Redcliffe are in. Redcliffe should have only come into the comp once we started to sell out games. If you want to go to the footy, go to the Broncos game. Strengthen the product that we've already got. But they want to weaken it to even up the field with the Sydney clubs. It's a shame.

Punishment should be a fine based on a percentage of their pay. Suspensions for violent or dangerous actions.

And if, like last night, a player is injured due to dangerous acts such as a shoulder charge to the face, that player should absolutely miss the next game against that team, you’re absolutely correct on that one.

I think he got himself into a bad position because he thought Oates was gonna go for the corner .
When he didn`t Drinkwater was wrong footed and in a bad body position . He did try to wrap an arm, it wasn`t like he tucked his arm in and took aim .

Sad for Oates by not malicious by Drinkwater . IMO .

Trainers can still call them… they just never do unless the coach wants them off or they’ve injured something other than their head

Fairly reasonable assessments. Reynolds was below his best but 5.5 is probably harsh. I still think he did quite a lot of good and controlled the game but had some poor moments.

The independent doctor is in the bunker.

All he can do is force a player from the field to undergo a HIA (which AFAIK, is still done by club doctors)

I feel it’s a bit of the too cool thinking, as we have a lot of people who think they’re elitist, particularly in the gold seating

others seem to be there to socialise and drink more than actually watch the game. Seriously the amount of people that go back and forth all night with trays of drinks throughout the game is ridiculous. So there’s no noise from them as well

I think a fair portion is also either nervousness/ hyperfocusing on each hitup in possession - soccer the ball can change hands (or feet) 1000 times a game so you don’t need to be paying attention. At least that’s how I am - like I’ll cheer when we score or on a break, but I’m not there to chant or sing songs like they do in soccer

The first hitup can really shape the mood of the crowd too. We get belted and we go quiet, we belt someone or make a half-break and we’re up for it the rest of the night

I believe trainers (who are obviously in on this scheme) can call HIAs.

all a player has to do is come reeling out of a tackle holding his head and it will likely trigger an independent HIA anyway… player gets a 10 min break, passes HIA and returns to the field.

last night I believe we used Corey’s head contact as an HIA to justify activating our 18th man… I can’t remember who the first one was but I’m sure any outside back who gets injured from now on will magically also happen to bump his head as he also sustains whatever other injury forces him from the field.. and no doctor or the NRL will ever cause a fuss about a team being ‘overly cautious’ about HIAs

Great win, the Walsh and Ezra combo is so exciting for us.

Really sad for Cozza, and pretty fkn annoyed at the weak suspensions handed to the cows. But what can we expect..

Corey's is an automatic, because it's a failed HIA caused by foul play leading to a sin bin or send off.

If Drinkwater hadn't been binned Arthars couldn't have been activated.

But in general yes trainers have been calling HIA on blokes holding their arms, legs, etc. for the free change.

They know the player isnt coming back and dont want to waste an interchange on an injury
