Tackling too hard.

There was a game a few years back where the ref literally said that a Broncos player 'tackled too hard' and conceded a penalty. Could have been the year that must not be named?
Does anybody remember what match this was?
Tyson Gamble vs. Manly 2021 in Magic Round.

30 minutes in.

Gerard Sutton 'It was a bit forceful'

The call followed another curious decision where Manly were essentially awarded a mulligan after they played out an entire set of six. They took play all the way back to where the set had started because the video referee had found a head high on play one.

It was very serious.

It`s the rules ...
The ref calls held and you take the guy over the sideline it`s a penalty .

Doesn`t matter if you think the tackle was complete or not . The ref called held . End of .

What is so hard to understand about that ?

Because he wasn't actually held

It's not within the rules to call geld when a player isn't held

What is so hard to understand about that ?

What is so hard to understand about that ?
Exactly... When he put this in his "argument" you know it's like talking to a brick wall so what's the point... was watching the game with 2 non broncos fans and they said the same; the fact the ref backed himself into a corner by calling held so early does not justify the penalty.... he is in the vast, vast minority on it so the onus is on him to answer, "what is so hard to understand about that?"

So next time the players disagree with the ref`s decision it`s just play on ?

I`m not saying it wasn`t a bad decision or that the players heard the ref`s call.
More that once he`s called held if you keep up the tackle a penalty will ensue .

I didn`t think it was a big deal at the time . And still don`t .
I have been a ref , let me tell ya it aint easy .

I think one strategy to improve refereeing is offer bigger money .
Then the pool of potetial officials would be greater and have individuals with higher fitness and better decision making .

It was a terrible call from a so called NRL standard ref. He needs to be better.

It was a bit unlucky. I think refs call held way too early these days in a lot of tackles. Agree these happen in every game and are part of the game and we need to just live with it.

Re-watched the first half before bed last night. The ref called held 0.5-1 second before he was taken over the line. It was clear he was getting driven out legitimately and did look like a poor call. Was a pretty good play by our boys and a bit annoying they didn't get awarded for it. End of the day it didn't cost us but, the quality of referring has deteriorated consistently every year for a while now. NRL should really consider getting some non Sydney based refs in to increase the pool they can chose from.

Consistency is also an issue. There have been games like the Roosters were some of those offloads were occurring after the tackled player was standing on the spot for a good 2-3 seconds.

It's game management. That's the real problem. Don't want that player who's going to get dragged into the in goal/in to touch - held almost instantly. Lot's of offloads going on, let's just wait and see what happens - meanwhile the defenders are hanging on worried they are about to give away a spurious six again.

I remember this. And so many similar calls. This was right in the thick of covid as well when oir country was going through some of the most hysterical knee jerk reactions I've ever seen. Only seemed fit for the NRL to follow suit
