PRE-GAME [Round 5, 2024] Broncos vs Storm

I was saying the same re Selwyn last year .
He`ll get a chance at centre sooner or later . Although I think Arthars is probably still in front of him in the centres pecking order .

He wouldn`t have been wasted if he scored twice like he potentially could have .
Moving him to centre causes a lot of reshuffle . To the left you swap him with Selwyn and start learning the defensive systems again ? Drop Koton and find another right winger ? I don`t think so . Mariner will split the line and run the length sooner or later .He keeps threatening to . Just a matter of time .
Staggs and Cobbo both come off contract end of next season (same as Walsh). If Selwyn blooms in the centres the way most are expecting, we'll have trouble fitting him under the cap. Same with Staggs, who might even need to take a shave. We would be doing extremely well to keep both. Meanwhile we have Mariner until 2027 and Leota coming up through the ranks. I expect Deine will take one of the centre positions.

Staggs is on a shit load already without really meeting the price he is on (not that he is far off) will be 26/27 end of contract he isn’t going to have potential dollars anymore so he will either take a shave or stay the same.

To use this as a way to bag him out, question his fitness / work ethic by some of you is ridiculous. He is three games into playing centre, last week doesn’t count and has clearly bulked up, he needs to get used to his new body but isn’t letting anyone at all down, far far from it.

Cobbo is tracking along fantastically.
I don't think casting a critical eye over any of our players is "ridiculous" any more than you (or anyone else) defending them. We have extremely high standards here at the Broncos and particularly fierce competition in the centres. No one is immune from examination.

Just on the intercept though: that was a classic winger play, one he's pulled off tons of times. He shouldn't have been anywhere near the sideline, he should've been able to rely on any number of evasive moves other than sheer pace and he did look like he was cruising. So fair game, I think.

But otherwise, point taken.

Selwyn is one of the incumbent Test wingers, and a length of the field specialist. At least partly because he's fast. He takes never getting run down for granted.

Even Dearden said something to the effect of him being in cruise mode. Credit to him for nabbing that intercept - another of his specialties - but he should've left Dearden eating dust.

The ongoing concern with Selwyn is - inbetween flashes of brilliance - he might be a touch lazy at times. Instances like this feed that concern.

The comparison with Herbie is unfair. He was NEVER accused of being lazy. Only selfish. They don't share any of the same concerns.

Being selfish is shitty, especially in the centres, but lazy (and unfit) is the kiss of death. Selwyn needs to squash that concern beyond reasonable doubt.

I've seen the footage, Dearden actually had a head start on him. When Selwyn crosses the 40, Dearden is at least 5 metres better off, at least. He got his angles spot on to assess exactly where he needed to make contact to effect the tackle.

I get the reaction, we'd rather not have our young gun get run down by the bloke who left the club, particularly after Selwyn has gone on to play rep footy as a winger but when you assess the tape, it's not as bad as you would think it is on first glance. Credit to Dearden, he was ahead of the play.

Selwyn's also saved a try there himself.

As a rule of thumb players the size of Selwyn usually look lazy in their gait, given their size. I remember watching Hodges thinking "this bloke isn't even having a go" but not many would run him down. Their length of stride deceives the eye on what you think their effort actually might be at any given moment.

We really, really need to train more for defusing short dropouts. We didn’t take possession once last night, regardless of which team was taking the dropout.

We also conceded that Kenny try in the GF from a dropout.

We seem to have no plan whatsoever.

Cows have a really good setup, you can tell they've practiced the shit out of it.

There’s a reason that’s considered a try saver of the year contender, it was amazing and Deartome deserves all the accolades he gets for it.

Dearden is noted for his quickness and his great defense for a half. In that situation, Cobbo would 9 times out of 10 normally use his size and fend and go in relatively easily. He’ll learn from it

Its fairly common knowledge he isnt as professional in some areas as he could be. Turning up late for training for example. Using his age as an excuse is a cop out imo. He's in his 4th year of first grade, with some of the best nutritionists and some very, very good professionals around him at the Broncos. He knows what he should be doing, he's got plenty of people pointing him in the right direction.

At the moment, i think his fitness is fine. I think he's lost a little explosiveness in his speed with him bulking up a little, but if he's not careful i could see him certainly carrying a bit too much weight. My issue with him last night was him going to close to the line in wet weather. It was dumb, everyone who knows slightly anything about the game knows doing that on a slippery surface is a bad idea.

Dearden is also about 15 metres out and 5 in on the left hand side of the post (10ish metres from centre field) before the camera pans away and over to Selwyn who takes the intercept 5m out.
Dearden probably had to travel 80-90 metres depending if he dropped back more and Selwyn had to go 95.
Dearden could of even dropped back more once the play went right which would shorten his distance more.
Good play by Dearden but it's not as bad as it looks for Selwyn.
Be good if they showed the speed the players were traveling like they normally do with that Telstra tracker.

And he could end up being the fittest bloke with the best work ethic to ever play the game. The point stands, it is ridiculous to question a guy’s fitness / work ethic because he got chased down by one of the best tackles you’ll ever see.

So he made a mistake by not going in field, which player hasn’t made a mistake? Our absolute freak fullback makes them all the time. He also spends copious amounts of time clearly on his nails and on social media, is anyone questioning his commitment / work ethic?

And you saying it is fairly common knowledge because you have said it before doesn’t make it necessarily true.

And the reality is, this bloke puts his hand up for touch carries all the time and like it or not, he is young and he is getting used to his new bulk in a new position, give him a break.

He ran for almost 200m last night depending on which stats you use and he regularly makes lots of metres and his been great defensively at centre, what more do you want from a 21 year old?

Of course its common knowledge, Kevvie gave it to him with both barrels about not turning up on time for training, it was all over the media about it. Coaches dont do that if its not an issue, they dont publicly criticise players over an isolated incident They do it when its an ongoing, repeated problem.

I dont know why you keep banging on about his fitness. I certainly haven't mentioned it, not sure a huge amount of people have really. People have expressed their concern about how he could go the way of Latrell for example. Its not an unfair comparison when you look at him. He clearly isnt the sort of bloke thats going to work on his body.

Players making errors get criticised. You are just sticking up for a player you like here because there is no way on earth you have never criticised a player for a dropped ball, or a missed tackle, or just playing shit. Its a forum, people will throw out praise and throw out criticism as well. I really dont get why people cant handle criticism when its warranted. Selwyn got plenty of praise for a good game against Penrith and against Souths, are we not supposed to be critical when he does something legitimately dumb?

I mean, he’s bulking up and looks strong, how is he not working on his body?

And of course I’m sticking up for a player I like just like you are looking can opportunity to bag out a player you’ve bagged out several times who made an error and somehow twisting that toward a ‘could happen’ situation.

He could turn out to be the next Latrell, he could also turn out to be the next Hodges, Lockyer or Lazarus. So what? He hasn’t.

And how long ago was this training ethic? How many years now? Is it impossible to grow up and mature?

Cobbo being the next Latrell wouldn't be the worst thing tbh...Latrell would probably be the best centre in the game if he played there. I don't mind Cobbo bulking up a bit and losing some speed, he takes so many tough carries. It looks like he enjoys the contact even if means taking a big hit.

Cobbo is fine, like I said before the defending would have taken a bit of gas out of him before he got the ball, dearden had a bit of a head start and he isn't the slowest player, if Cobbo was fresh it would have been an easy try from everything I have seen this year he hasn't lost speed and he has always looked a bit chubby, it's just his build.

That said he is significantly faster than Trell has ever been.

if he is half a metre in field he scores. As it was it was so close to a try. He will learn from it. But it was a freak tackle rather than a Cobbo **** up. 9 times out of 10 he scores. Should be praising Dearden rather than ragging on Cobbo. If he doesnt take the intercept and they score....whole differebt game. This whole Dearden ran him down and Cobbo is slow is BS

Yeah pretty much, it was just a very good effort by Dearden to save that try, Cobbo had to go for it given the distance but it just didn't work out, he said that he only noticed Dearden was there right at the end which is probably the biggest reason why he got caught, because no player is going to waste their energy at full blast if they think they have it.

a big run like that take alot out of you, which will effect the rest of the game in some capacity.

Can't fault Cobbo. Credit to Dearden. Didn't impact result thankfully. Same as knock on from kick chase. Most don't get there but Cobbo did. Inces from a miracle try but stats show a knock on. Do I want someone chasing and almost score...yes i do
