That's a good point, everyone expects the high looping short kick. What about a hard, fast grubbering kick, put pressure on the receiver to scoop it up and commit or try and trap it.
And yeah aiming for the touch line too would be better than what we were serving up last night.

Yep I think we saw what can happen in that scenario in the big dance last year .
Put your foot over the sideline and touch the ball . Penatly in front of the posts ...
Righto !

Haha yeah true. Maybe not a high kick at the sideline, more a controlled kick along the ground

Or even try high and long to give your chasers more time to make up territory. Either way… this team can’t be going short.
OK repeat set so kick long run 40 metres to the 1st tackle .
On tackle 6 the opposition kick it in goal and rinse repeat .

How does that solve the problem ?

It`s actually easier to defend 10 metres out would you believe ?
13 in the line and the wingers don`t drop back . It`s been a thing for several years now ...

The risk vs reward is on the wrong teams side.

Opposition risks keeping the kicking team in their own 10. We risk having one of the best teams in the comp on our try line.

2023 Grand Final is enough proof to say that these kicks are absolutely dumb.

Let in two tries .
Got run over for 1 didn`t even tackle anyone for the 2nd .
Mixed bag IMO .
Agreed but I've gotta say he's looking more in control every game he plays. I could totally see him playing halfback.

Short goal line dropout:
- Some chance of recovery
- Significant chance of penalty
- More chance of giving up try on the 'crash play'
- Less fatigue defending with minimal distance to get back onside

Long goal line dropout:
- No chance of recovery
- Very low chance of penalty
- More chance for opposition to create forward momentum to open up gaps in the line
- More fatigue defending a larger distance to goal line

With the new rules, the NRL wants more short kickoffs. If they can be done well, then they are actually the better option in my opinion - there's positives and negatives which even out for long and short, but short gives you the chance at recovery.

But it depends if you can execute or not. If you are well-drilled and know you can do it effectively, short goal line dropout is better... but if you can't do it consistently, then better to just boot it long.

We fall into the latter.

A repeat set is better than an easy try. A repeat set is not guaranteed either, takes a deft kick.
We can kick it short and they can kick it in goal for a repeat set too. At least kicking it long they have to use their forwards energy for 3 or 4 tackles to get back to being close to the line.

Don’t know the stats but we would easily be the worst team at getting back the short dropout. I legit cannot remember winning one this year. Then we are forced to defend our line, normally for 2 sets.
Ezra can be great in attack but boy his defence is horrendous. Every team picks him out. He attempts to tackle but more times then not he is just bumped off.
Sailor is a gun but went for the low % plays last night too many times in the dying minutes.
I’d like to see sailor at 6 and Ez at 7 if Walsh can make it back next week.
Big Ben was great, loved how he just ran straight and hard, hopefully he can stay in the 17.
It also has to be questioned how many games reyno is going to be playing in the next 2yrs as it really looks like his body isn’t holding up and quite obviously without him we look like we have no idea what to do in attack.
One last thing, I liked Kevvie’s post game presser. I fully expected him to walk in there and talk about how gutsy we were about losing by 2 to a full strength storm side on their home turf. But he was pissed off, and so was I.
We lost that one last night and it could be very costly down the track.
2/5 isn’t panic stations but we are certainly falling behind.

Cuts both ways ours use energy getting out to the long dropout and getting back 10 for a set

So you’re saying they practiced the “up by 2, 8 minutes to go, 10m out, take the penalty goal” strategy?

I can’t say I’ve heard that one verbalised, no.

That is not very Kevvie, I’d be shocked if it was from him.

Some teams do it for three reasons, soaks up time, gives you a break and you get to attack from further out for a set- which a lot of teams Broncos included like.

Is there anyone at all that thinks taking the 2 to go up by 4 in a high scoring shoot out was a good call, other than our decision makers?

The game always felt as though we'd get run down right at the end but it felt over after that call.

First off Broncos brothers & sisters; no need for panic!

We have been very competitive in each loss so far, a few years ago this team going 10 points down led to a final score of 30-40 points put on us.

Not now - we compete to the best of our abilities for 80 minutes.

But, there is a limit to what you can do when over 20% of your cap is on the sidelines.

Better days ahead....
