Yeah, he wasn't that bad. Silly penalty early and threw a sort of silly pass, but more on Billy not paying attention. He had some tough carries early on and got involved. Willison smashed him though, playing similar minutes.

Willison is a freak ...161m in 38 minutes is Haas like .... Hell dare I say even better than Haas.

It was Madden’s excellent bomb that KNick dropped which led to Cobbo’s first try. I don’t blame you if you were asleep for that passage of play. Much of the game was masquerading as a derby. Frankly I think the crowd were dudded tonight. How can that ref be so dumb with only one head?
He shanked the kick. It wasn't intentional lol.

A year or two ago we were calling for him to get more involved, the end of last season and even more so this season he has improved out of sight. I don't care if he's not barging through 3 defenders to score, if he keeps taking those tough carries and winning the rucks for us he is doing a great job for the team, especially while we're missing Haas.
I reckon some of that criticism of staggs was unfair back then. He had just returned from an ACL and probably didn't have huge confidence to be pushing past defensive lines. He's been a revelation this year staggs. No need to put him in space he will bowl over the defenders and create some himself!

Also willison with far more minutes tonight. Even if baker starts next week, I think his role has been replaced by willison and will eventually be behind him in the pecking order

Agree regarding Staggs.

Willison needs to stay on the bench though for all the reasons mentioned by others. If we can get over some of the niggles and not need to carry a back on the bench, Hetherington, Willison & Te Kura (once given more time) will be an insane bench.

Yeah agree baker cab just soak up the first 20 minutes, willison comes on for the bigger minutes and goes full animal

We're back to the first half of last year with some of our spine thinking every half chance is a reason to go for the low percentage play.

As much as I love Oates, Bennett was drooling once he was selected as wing and good old dropsy dick fingers delivered on queue. He's like that slow old 82 hilux ute that keeps turning up with solid carries - but his hands have been horrid for years. Tonight, his biggest contribution was destorying the hammer's hamstring - which actually probably gave us the edge to be fair, but that was bad luck for Hammer, nothing more. Oatsey put down bombs, wasn't in position for 2 potential tries, was too far in field for another and just ever so barely got to the try he scored. Defensively, he got caught out of position a few times and his actions directly contributed to two tries against us tonight.

He might be able to service a backup role off the bench for the second row, but he doesn't have the hands, defensive chops or speed to handle a wing role any longer and hasn't looked even half servicable there since Drinky broke his jaw which is a terrible shame. He had a horror run of injuries last year, but the games he did play after he came back from his jaw - he was equally as terrible as tonight.

Most of the team made errors tonight though so it's hard to be too tough on just Oates as there were lots of players deserving an absolute rocket after tonight - putrid handling all round. Giving away 8 penalties and 17 errors. Any half decent team takes that kind of display and puts 50 on us. Thankfully they were hot trash.
Defensively Oates made the critical tackle on the centre a few times and one on Milford. The one where Isaako went through he had 2 on 1 and chose the centre again.

I don't think players like Madden and Baker were that bad. Did what was expected, and it wasnt them making all the errors. It's a bit unfair to compare them to our superstars (who are paid a lot more too). While they can be better, they both played much better then previous weeks.

Counting the hits and not the misses doesn't make up for a poor performance.

How good was it to see oates storming down the field and dispensing another fullback. I know it was all for nothing but still good to see the big fella in space.
his legs were going in every direction

Combination of the expectations being too high and the narrative too strong. Same thing has consistently happened with Riki for ages. Even recently he's been playing great and collecting points in PotW and there are still people calling him out as useless...

If you aren't visibly a superstar scoring tries and making no errors, a lot of fans will think you are terrible.
