POST GAME 2023 NRL Grand Final - Penrith vs Brisbane

Oh please.

The ref had a great game

I'm not necessarily saying he didn't, and full credit to him for not having a monumental **** up that turned the game. But there should be a consistent, predictable level of officiating, not, 'It's the GF, we'll let the high shots slide.'

Who knows, we might have got slaughtered had they reffed it like a regular season game. I'm not taking anything away from Penrith, or shifting any of the blame for the mistakes our guys made, it's just a pet hate of mine is all.

For the people saying we are done.

Remember it took Panthers losing a Grand Final to Melbourne to win 3 in a row.
They needed that loss and it made them far better for it.

I don't doubt for one second this team will come back stronger on the back of this.

I didn't sleep a wink last night after that. I'm immensely proud of our team but at the end of the day, we were just another also ran who tried to break the Panther's dynasty in 2023. No one remembers who came second.
My mantra is always that you HAVE to win a premiership in a year when the football gods are kind and give you a (relatively) injury free season and when everything else clicks.
There are no guarantees next year that we can climb the mountain again so I'm just devastated that we let a premiership slip last night.
It really hurts too that Herbie and Flegler are gone. I sat through every Under 20s game and watched those 2 young men develop. I haven't always been their biggest fan but it riles me to think that another team is going to get them just as they hit their prime. I'm not confident we can be a stronger team next year without them.
A lot of negative thoughts this morning but I'll pay my money for season tickets and be there again next year.

Keep your chin up brother, remember we have the likes of Maam, Walsh and Haas in this side.
All young men with very very bright futures in front of them.
No way we are not serious contenders for the foreseeable future with talent like that in the side.

Plus i truly believe players actually want to come to the Broncos now, unlike 2021 and before.

This one hurts but honestly, this feels different to 2015. Time will tell of course but think about it objectively, as hard as it is to do so. Our team is so young and so talented. Our six just had a blinder and he isn’t lazy like Milford was. Our two experienced blokes in Reynolds and Capewell had shockers but they will learn from it.

Yes we are losing Flegs but we have two amazing young guys coming through in Te Kura and Willison which we didn’t have in 2015. We also have a silky back who has superstar written all over him in Mariner.

We probably overachieved this year and despite Penrith being just about perfect, we had them until one stupid play turned the tide and Cleary went next level and we just ran out of gas.

Think about it, our spine is better than 2015 and they didn’t implode like that one did. Our gun players in that year were all coming to their end in Boyd, Hodges, Parker and Thaiday, 2023’s version is just getting started.

We built resilience on last year’s capitulation to miss finals, we have every reason to think the same will be true in 2024.

This season has been a joy to behold and we’ll be better next year because we will still be as potent but will gain the maturity to take it to the next level.

The future is very, very bright.

The big difference is Penrith had young playmakers.

As good as Ezra is, I can't see him being a game manager. Who fills the void when Reynolds retires in the next year or two? It seems like it will be the pre Reynolds broncos. A team with great talent, but no one to steer them around.

Luckily we are keeping Reynolds post career to guide whoever comes next.

starting to see replays of the tries on social media now. The first try wouldn’t happen again in a million years. In hindsight Herbie could have just caught the damn thing. He was uncontested.

I know people think Walsh is the messiah, but he really needs to focus on fullback basics. His defence was terrible, he doesnt seem to organise and his positioning was all over the place. His excellence in attack has kind of masked how poor he is at times. If he wants to be elite, you cant just rely on your attack.

He should have closed that hole Cleary ran through at the end. He was just lazy and didn't push across when Riki did.

That’s my thoughts also, as shocking as Reynolds played when he’s done we’re gonna be struggling. Let this chance slip so bad.

Yeah, I think either this year or the next is the premiership window for the broncos.

Hopefully they can bounce back next year, but last night was a massive opportunity missed.

That game was set up for Reynolds. 20 mins left with a 16 point lead. He should have closed that game out from there.

The worst thing is now having to hear about the Panthers for the next 12 months. Even if it had been any other team that lost to them in that fashion I'd be annoyed. As much as it pains me to say this, I do think the better team won in the end. Broncos were terrible in the first half, and I think it came back to bite them in the end.

They didn’t put on the points but the pressure they continually put on us was so tough and the errors we continually made, I really feel like the scoreline flattered us, we looked good for 10/15 minutes out of 80.

Woke up feeling like I got punched in the face, Wanted to go see the boys leave Sydney but didn’t have the heart to do it. Hope the supporters come out in Brissy today. I know the boys will be heartbroken and most of them being so young it will be a tough pill to swallow but hopefully seeing the support today will help

I woke up and watched the highlights of the game and was sort of hoping I'd had too many beers last night and passed out before I saw us score another try.

If I'm been 100% honest with myself, i don't think we deserved to be ahead 24-8 at that stage of the game. Apart from that 15 minute period of brilliance i thought we were very average. The scoreline flattered us in my opinion.

The first 30 mins we were out enthused, out muscled and made some⁸ very very silly cheap errors. We managed to jag a try on half time but then give away a 7 tackle set to start the second half. Something clicked and we scored 3 quick tries then we went back to playing poor footy.

It probably played out in the way many of us semi expected but hoped it wouldn't and that is we just gave them too many chances.
It's hard to judge becuase Panthers are such a good team and it was a grand final but for mine that performance as a collective team was probably in the bottom 7-10 performances for the year. It was a similar performance to a few we put on this year which we won and left the game saying "wow we played bad and still won, so much improvement to come". Unfortunately the improvement didn't come.

My final thought. I hope that game is a catalysts for 20 year old Mam to really become a superstar.

This is my biggest concern.
I want to know what the club's plan is post Reynolds?
Do they have an eye on an up and coming talent to transition into the No.7 jersey?
