Wait which Roberts are we talking about now?

this is turning into another Shannon Boyd/Darius Boyd situation.

This one:

Sadly the Mole is usually spot on with depth signings.

I'm not a fan of the Kenner signing at all. I could understand a one year deal but even then it's an admission that Brisbane failed to sign any decent prospect to a contract. Now Kennar tried hard but it was evident that he wasn't capable of producing much more and he was still below first grade standard. He doesn't have much if any speed, he isn't a threat under the high ball, he doesn't break through tackles or offer any versatility. I'd almost release him, just to sign a centre so Farnworth doesn't have to spend any time there when he's clearly a winger.

We're not even two weeks into his reign and Kevie is already making blues.

Nah I disagree almost totally with this post and that is unusual with you my man.

Kennar is not a gun, no one is saying he is. However, you need depth and he has shown that he is decent depth. Should he be starting? Heck no but these are the times we live in thanks to the previous coach's roster mess.

Kennar put in every game he played, that deserves recognition. I would prefer him over a Joffa any day of the week because while he is very limited, he never took a backward step, not once and he is on peanuts.

He is the kind of background signing you need to make while trying to attract the stars that are very much needed for this side.

This squad has very little plug and play depth and Kennar is exactly that, a kind of break glass in emergency kind of depth signing who costs the club next to nothing but actually provides something in the depth department.

That's setting the bar too low.

It's like Travis Waddell all over again. Yes he wasn't the worst signing in Brisbane Broncos history but he applied absolutely no pressure to Andrew McCullough and could not push his way into the team. If you saw Waddell's name in the team, you knew something was wrong and it was evidently clear in the way the Broncos would play.

I could understand it if it was for one year as a frank admission that there wasn't a lot out there. But two? The Broncos need to dig themselves out of this, signing these fringe players who have done nothing to make this club successful is the wrong way to go about it.

I'm with Sproj. It's a depth signing. You can't have every player challenging for positions with the salary cap. Obviously a good winger is preferable but it's going to cost more and you need to fill those last positions with players too.

Maybe the 2 years is an admission of nerves that either or both of Staggs and Coates won’t be in 2022

Kennar was originally offered match payments to begin with. Its a base deal. Got to fill the squad up. Cant all be superstars and at least he was reliable this year.
We still signing Cam Smith?

im assuming he’s taking Oates spot on the wing? Take that any day of the week for the price, he’s not shit under the highball, doesn’t come off his wing to defend in the halves 🙄

Don't think I have ever disagreed with you but yeah I can't agree with this one. Kennar is a depth signing/squad filler and no matter which way you slice it having a depth player that has proven they can handle the NRL is never a bad thing.

Fair enough that you have a low opinion on Kennar but to call this a blue by Kevvie just because you don't personally rate a player is a bit ridiculous if I am being honest.

It would be OK if it was just for one season, but committing to a bad player for two seasons just because he's cheap is a bad signing.

It isn't like he just showed up half-way through the season playing for a contract, he's been in the NRL system for six years and has always been a mediocre player. I would have thought Broncos fans would have remembered how we tore him apart not once but twice in 2018, but apparantly not.

I don't disagree with your assessment of his on-field value but that may well not be the reason he's been kept on. Having a seasoned campaigner around to fill out the top however-many-it's-going-to-be-next-year, help out the young blokes by setting an example at training and off-field and provide a injury cover for when your better backs are busted/playing origin/suspended, all at minimum wage, for a couple of years while our first 17 get used to playing NRL isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Kennar’s not a world-beater, and his efforts have probably been helped by how trash we were in general, but what would you prefer?

Have to rely on Oates and his overpaid dickfingers? Or sign up another rookie or journeyman winger to do fill in? Or keep Kennar on a modest contract and has experience both here and the NRL in general

Kennar deserves to be rewarded for his season, and two years is nothing when talking about someone of his level, provided he’s only on ~200k

That money could be better spent and they could invest that in somebody with a higher ceiling. Kennar is a mediocre player and the longer they commit to these players that disgraced this club the harder it is for them to be competitive. The Broncos made the mistake last pre-season when they committed to 36 players only a couple of weeks into the pre-season, they should be keeping as many spots open as possible.

However it's not official yet so I may have jumped the gun. I just think this idea of signing bad players because they're cheap is frought with danger. See Des Hasler circa 2016-now.
