Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

With regards to our lack of depth in the middle next year, hame sele could be a value for money option. He is mid 20s, 59 nrl games to his name and has been performing pretty well (was very good against the panthers this week).

Similar to Jensen when we picked him up.

The origin affected team will be this I imagine:

1. Farnworth
2. Oates
3. Staggs
4. Mariner
5. Arthars
6. Mam
7. Reynolds (c)
8. Flegler
9. Walters
10. Jensen
11. Frei
12. Riki
13. Hetherington

14. Paix
15. Palasia
16. Taupau
17. Piakura
Optomistic Origin ; Walsh , Oates , Cobbo , Carrigan , Flegler , Capewell , Haas . * Staggs if he continues in the form he is . Then Hoeter plays centre and Quai Ward plays wing .

Arthars
Perrera
Mariner
Staggs
Hoeter
Mam
Reynolds
Hetherington
Riki
Piakura
Jensen
Walters
Taupau

Palasia
Baylis
Willison
Paix

Going to need to buy a forward for next year for a few years till Ben Tekura is of age

He's a good player in the role that he's doing at the moment, but we have Kobe fulfilling that role.

I think Havili is the better player in that role for Souths... he played 22 games last year vs Sele's 11... and he played 38mins compared to Sele's 28mins. The two get compared because they have a similar stature, but Havili was a game changer for Demetriou last year when he started using him as a lock/prop.

At the moment coaches everywhere are looking for the robust mobile middle forward that can keep the roll on through the middle, but I wonder if there is a tipping point as to how many you can carry in a 17 each week.

Cows had Granville and Cotter out there last night vs knights who had Gamble and Mann playing as lock, and there were definitely a lot of meters to be had on both sides. So as much good as they bring in generating momentum and getting meters, I'm wondering if there is also a lack of starch in defence and conceding meters.

Even last year I think the broncos at one point against dragons had a middle of Kobe, Gamble and Willison on the field at once... we won the game easily, but from memory when we had that middle rotation on the field it did not go well.

I think at the moment small forwards are the rage and they definitely have their purpose, but I'm not sure how many a team can carry in the 17 each week before it starts to become a liability defensively. Sele can definitely fill a role as a squad member, but does it still work if we end up with him and Kobe in the team at the same time due to injuries, suspensions, etc.

Granville was really struggling to keep up lastnight, though you could easily say that for the whole Cows team, to be fair, but he seemed noticeably more gassed than most others. And Cotter is freaking solid, but he's not real fast is he. I think it's situational, smaller men v smaller men is fine, I think the issues come if the opposition has a massive bench and you're giving away 80kgs. But that can turn as the bigger guys get fatigued, too, so there's really no 'right' or 'wrong' here IMO. Who'd want to be a coach?!

Yeah and I think Demetriou leant hard into the smaller forwards after the success of Havili, and he started carrying both him and Sele in the 17... but I don't think it went all that well for him at times.

Penrith go with a really small bench of Sorensen, Salmon and Kenny/Soni, but I don't think it's going quite as well for them this year compared to the last few years. It might be that Cleary is having to rely on Salmon more than what he would expect, due to injuries, but he's also playing Kenny and Soni on the field at the same time.

It seems an odd approach for Cleary since the smaller forwards are generally in teams to use footwork and generate momentum with ball in hand, but he almost exclusively uses his backs for yardage... I feel like the rest of the comp is catching up to Penrith to an extent though, so it will be interesting if he keeps going with his smaller bench approach.

With Haas’s new found explosiveness, he has differentiated himself from Willison in terms of prop type. This to me means that thanks to Haas, Xavier’s value has also gone up. The big issue is injuries though.

Speaking of small benches... oof

I just have not seen enough of willison to get excited. It's a concern that he can't get his injuries under control this early in his career.

heard on ABC grandstand today that Haas has been offered $1.8 million per year from French Rugby Union. (John Gibbs then couldn't think of a reason for Haas to stay in the NRL).

So, the Australian rugby union are going to have zero chance at Haas. He'll either go for the money and head to France ... or he'll stay on a fair deal and continue to play with his mates

His father seems to be saying he's got decent interest in playing Union.

Well that’s going to be hard to compete with. Brace for impact on that decision

maybe he does.

but i don't see him taking the middle offer. if he ends up playing union, he'll take the biggest off which is likely to be the reported French one.

although, maybe his fathers take on this is to try and get more cash from us, given that we've dismissed Union as a threat (at least publicly)

That will be hard to stomach if we lose Haas... we probably gave up on the Flegler deal to keep hold of Haas, and rightfully so... but to then get blindsided by French Rugby with a ridiculous deal.

I get the feel Haas' team is looking to get more money out of us... maybe a $1.2m deal... which would be a fair amount of cash invested in a prop.

If they're calling out French Rugby it might mean the ARU can't really compete with our current deal... maybe they blew their load on Suaalii, and you'd think Haas' team would want more money than him if he was to move to Australian Rugby

I'm done worrying if players stay or go to yawnion, at least if he goes to yawnion he's not playing against us at another NRL team like the Roo$ters.

Just tell him to make his decision sooner rather than later so we have time to recruit a replacement.
