OFFICIAL Bellamy extends contract with Melbourne Storm

they didn't miss out on Green ... they didn't chase Green because they don't want Green

Bullshit ... Paul White would be under absolutely no pressure ... his job isn't winning premierships (that's what we have a coach for) it is ensuring that the club is successful off the field ... and he is the man responsible for the Broncos thriving empire

what a load of shit ...

Bennett isn't responsible for contracts. he tells the board who he wants and they put the financial package together. at most he would be the guy they turn to to convince someone why accepting our offer is the right move

sounds like Badel is trying to take the focus off the fact that White made him look stupid when he asked about Green

Do you know this for sure? I’d have thought a coach was up to his neck in these decisions. It would be pretty unreasonable for a coach to be successful when he doesn’t even get a say in his roster.

did you actually read it before you bolded ...

"he tells the board who he wants" ... that is a coach getting a say in his roster

Not a problem, it's not a requirement that you should know to whom I referred.

No that's true, just thought you would like to deal with facts as you expect others too.

The way you explain it is that he says he wants said player and leaves the rest up to others.

How can he forge a team with about being involved in the distribution of talent and the division of funds to ensure he gets a roster he’s accountable for?

So he said to the board he’d like Bird and gave no indication of what he’d like to pay him per year? I’d imagine a head coach is the best person to place an accurate value on a player, not a board.

Storm almost resigned to losing Bellamy to the Broncos

By Adrian Proszenko & Phil Lutton

24 May 2018 — 10:00pm

Melbourne fear Craig Bellamy is leaning towards leaving the club in a move that would force Brisbane to make a call on whether to part company with Wayne Bennett a season early.

Bellamy has a three-year, $1.7 million-per-season deal in front of him from the Storm which he claims he hasn’t had time to properly, consider despite being in possession of it for almost a month.

The Broncos claim their conversations with Bellamy haven’t progressed as far as tabling an offer, a claim the Storm isn’t buying. While the southerners are one of the few clubs that compete with the Broncos in a chequebook war, factors such as family and the looming retirements of ageing stars Cameron Smith and Billy Slater are weighing heavily on Bellamy’s mind.

“We’d dearly love to keep him and will fight hard to do so,” said Melbourne co-owner Matt Tripp.

“We believe he belongs in Melbourne. We certainly won’t be beaten so far as the offer goes.

“We think our offer is reasonable and fair. He’s synonymous with the Melbourne Storm, he’s a legend of the club, he’s a legend in our state and we want him to stay that way.”

While they are still holding out hope he will stay put, the Storm privately believe they are outsiders for the signature of their premiership-winning mentor.

Bellamy’s departure would have huge ramifications for both clubs. While his assistant Adam O’Brien would be the frontrunner to take over, the Storm would go through a formal process to appoint a replacement. Former Souths mentor Michael Maguire and Parramatta coach Brad Arthur - who both did their apprenticeships at the Storm under Bellamy - would be among those considered.

A move to Brisbane would solve one problem for the club but create another. Any decision to remove Bennett a year early was made harder on Wednesday after a public guarantee from chief executive Paul White that Bennett's job was safe for 2019.

But if Bellamy's signature was dependent on him making a move right away, without taking a year's break between jobs, it would back Brisbane's board into a corner.

Sources familiar with the club told Fairfax Media on Thursday that the Broncos would have little choice but to do the previously unthinkable should Bellamy want to hit the ground running after departing the Storm.

There would be a significant backlash from supporters of Bennett if he was treated in such fashion. He's larger than life at the Broncos and still has a platoon of influential supporters.

But there would be an equally difficult scenario for Brisbane if they had Bellamy ready to come to the club and failed to land the biggest fish on the coaching menu. If Bennett then left after next season, they would be back to square one.

There is the feeling that Bellamy might be the only man capable of taking over from Bennett at Red Hill. Bennett virtually said so himself, saying the role required the highest possible profile and the best coaching credentials. It was a compelling argument and in reality, only Bellamy fits the bill. If he wanted a new challenge, there may be none greater than trying to make an imprint of his own at the Broncos, which stumbled along without Bennett and then lured him back.

Bennett said he already had offers and the most intriguing scenario could see him at the Gold Coast Titans, a club which now has former Broncos chairman Dennis Watt at the head of its board. Garth Brennan has only just arrived but few clubs, especially one with as much to prove as the Titans, would turn up their nose at Bennett's services for a few seasons.

Brisbane would likely foot a large part of his wages as part of any deal, which may yet see Bennett not only coaching against the Broncos but doing it from 100km away. Broncos chairman Karl Morris has been in London and didn't return messages from Fairfax Media on Thursday.

Former Broncos and Storm premiership-winning prop Glenn Lazarus unloaded on Bennett during a radio interview on Thursday morning.

"A lot of good people have been kicked to the kerb by the Broncos when Wayne Bennett was the head coach," Lazarus told Macquarie Sports Radio.

"I’ll just name a few: Gary Belcher, Kevvy Walters, myself, long-term strength and conditioner and loyal servant to Wayne, Steve Nance, Ivan Henjak, and Anthony Griffin (who) was punted so Wayne could come back.

“All of that was dragged through the media and obviously it was very public and it hurt. It was very hurtful. Now, the tables have turned, and I tell you now that a lot of people are sitting back, watching this unfold are just very keen to see how it plays out.

“In a lot of ways, it is (karma).”

Lazarus said Bennett shouldn’t be immune from the cut-throat nature of the coaching industry.

“Just because it’s Wayne Bennett, everyone seems to think it’s a little bit disrespectful,” Lazarus said.

“I know the man’s about to coach his 800th game (against Parramatta), but suck it up Wayne.”

Now the Storm's offer is $1.7 million a year? This is simply games being played through "leaks" to the media to bump his price up. He may be seriously interested in coming here, but the way this is playing out is just a farce.

Unbelievable how many journos know what clubs "privately believe"

At the risk of upsetting @Marty Deutschmann again I am going to have another opinion.

This is all starting to have a ‘Cooper Cronk to the Titans’ stench about it. It is going down the same path. Storm about to re-sign him, next minute he is talking to the Titans. Then came the ‘Storm resigned to losing Cronk’.

I wonder if this will be the same pantomime complete with shocked face from the CEO at the press conference when Bellamy announces he is staying?

So youre saying Bellamy to the Roosters is confirmed?

Bellamy and Broncos chief executive Paul White have both claimed the Red Hill-based club haven’t tabled an offer, but NRL 360 host Paul Kent claimed that wasn’t true.
“There has been an offer, it hasn’t been contracted as such,” Kent told The Late Show with Matty Johns.
“But certainly they’ve discussed terms and amounts.
“I spoke to Bart Campbell, chairman of the Melbourne Storm
“He said if Craig’s after a four-year deal we can offer that, we turn over $31 million a year, there is no way the Broncos will outbid us."

Was Cronk going to the Titans? I must have completely missed that rumour.

It was back in 2012 IIRC, probably a bit longer than that. There was a rumour that Cronk was going to the Titans. The Titans were going on a bit of a spending spree and Cronk was a player they were going after.

Melbourne said in an article they had genuine concerns that Cronk was going to leave Storm.

$1.7mil p/yr, faarrrrrrrk..
I'd love for him to come but if Melbourne want to pay him that much, they can keep him! I'd prefer we kept WB on 1.2mil for another year and prepare for succession in 2020.
